Partners in Education – Jay Marie Salon and Spa

At Don Roberts School of Hair Design, we believe that education is learner-driven and never-ending. Our goal is to provide our graduates with skills to earn an exceptional income. We also, know the beauty industry is filled with exciting opportunities for those with a high standard of excellence and proficiency – making education a priority.

Our industry is ever-changing and re-inventing itself. We often partner up with various professionals and invite them into our classrooms. These professionals come from a variety of sources, such as licensed salons/spas, medical facilities, retailers, platform artists, and more.

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with one of our partners in education – Jay Marie Salon and Spa owner Jennifer “Jay” Fischer. The Jay Marie Salon and Spa is an assembled team of highly qualified individuals with a great depth of knowledge and experience in their respective fields. Jay and her staff hold the same value, focus, and respect for professional services, positive guest experiences, and education. So much so that Jay not only offers an extensive hands-on apprenticeship program for her newly hired professionals, but she also started Creative Space Pro.

Creative Space Pro is a unique salon and spa education space for licensed professionals. They host a variety of beauty culture events, educational courses, and workshops.  Let’s catch up with Jay!

Question (Q): Tell us about you!

Answer (A): I am Jennifer ‘Jay’ Fischer, of Jay Marie Salon and Spa. I’ve been a stylist for over 20 years, and I am loving every minute of it. In my experience, the industry is extremely inspiring and ever-evolving. There are so many avenues to take in the beauty industry and find it to be extremely fulfilling. I am still behind the chair full time and I am also a Pravana Educator. In addition, I have had the opportunity to be a part of many photo shoots, editorial shoots, and backstage work including “New York Fashion Week” and on the set of “So You Think You Can Dance.”

I am so grateful for all the opportunities I have had and hope that I can offer that same flexibility and encouragement for young professionals in the industry to follow their dreams and shoot for the moon.

Q: Can you describe how you are connected to Don Roberts School of Hair Design?

A: I personally have been connected to Don Roberts School of Hair Design for many years as an educator and mentor in the salon. Recently, the salon provided tours and had an opportunity for to be licensed professionals to come and observe us on a regular business day. It gives students a peek into what the day of a stylist or spa team member entails. We also come into the school to offer demonstrations, motivational speaking, and live Q & A’s.

Q: How long have you been working with and hiring our graduates?

A: Jay Marie Salon and Spa have been working with and hiring graduates since the beginning. We offer an apprenticeship program for our stylists and extensive hands-on training for the spa side.

Q: How well do you feel our graduates are prepared for salon life?

A: The graduates are as prepared as they can be. I think when new graduates come out of school, they are ready to hit the ground running. This is completely understandable. They are ready! However, there is also a learning curve in being prepared to provide exceptional guest service. We enjoy leading new graduates on that path. It’s extremely rewarding to assist a new graduate at the beginning of their career path. Hopefully, it will be a long, rewarding one!

Q: What characteristics are you looking for in newly licensed professionals?

A: Hardworking, willingness to learn, open to trying new methods and techniques, motivation to learn (products, services, theory, and ingredients), positivity, uplifting, and team player mentality. For your own success, read this one more time!

Q: Do you have any examples of Don Roberts School of Hair Design graduates you’ve hired that are doing particularly well for themselves?

A: Peter is one of our most recent graduates.  He’s such an asset to our team. (Learn more about Peter here). Everyone just loves him! He is a breath of fresh air and is always ready to provide exceptional service. Furthermore, he is constantly practicing and continuing his education while he is in the spa, in his downtime.

Peter has eagerly performed spa services on many of our employees to help promote his business. He has proven a success and is beginning to build his clientele with his warm demeanor and extensive product knowledge of the skin.
