Why We’re Different

Don Roberts School of Hair Design is a privately-owned spa school with a focus on our students. Since we’re privately owned, we don’t respond to the financial demands of outside investors. This allows us to keep our classes small and provide quality education.

Our externship program is a key part of our curriculum. The graduates of our school find the time spent in the off-campus externship programs to be an awesome and rewarding experience.

The Schererville Campus is also the only full-service SPA SCHOOL in Northwest and Central Indiana.

Our History

Don Roberts School of Hair Design is a private school. The original school began in Calumet City Illinois in 1961. Mr. Roberts opened his first school because he was unable to find qualified employees for his salons. The Calumet City Campus was the first of six schools in Illinois and Indiana. Janet Stemmer, a DR alumni, has owned the Don Roberts School of Hair Design since 1978.

Don Roberts School of Hair Design is very well established and offers exceptional opportunities. We have proven the test of time because we keep up with the times. All curriculum for the programs offered are continually evolving to meet the demands of the industry. We offer group and private education, both for the undergraduate and licensed professional.

Graduate Professional Outlook

Many of our graduates find immediate employment. Employment opportunities can be found in the salon/spa, behind the chair or treatment bed/table, in management, ownership, and/or education. A few of the innovative job opportunities that have found our graduates are independent contractor positions, work in a mobile salon/spa, and cruise line. Graduates of Don Roberts School of Hair Design have entered the job market with above-average skills and have no limitations when looking for entry-level employment.

  • In life you get what you invest. At DR, my instructors didn’t meet me half way, they met me the whole way. I gave my education 100% of my everything; desire and effort.     My educational journey at Don Roberts began in cosmetology and continued in the instructor’s program. Since I had the cosmetology curriculum fresh in my brain, I was then able to crossover 900 hours from the cosmetology program and into the barber’s crossover program and then only had to complete 600 hours for the barbering program. At a more accelerated rate, I was then able to pass my state test for barbering. The crossover program was such a great way to fast-track my learning path.
